From the start,The Gibson Company was founded by Orville Gibson as a manufacturer of Mandolins. Mr. Gibson replaced the bowl style mandolin with a sturdier flat style that was much easier to mass manufacture. Thus began a reputation for new designs that continues to this day. Gibson created the first truly electric guitar (not electrified acoustic) and then built the iconic Les Paul solid body.
